Fourteen years after 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill student Faith Hedgepeth was found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment on September 7, 2012, the man accused of killing her is on trial in Durham County, North Carolina.
Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree burglary. He was arrested in September 2021 after investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence. He has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder.
Faith was a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribal community and an aspiring pediatrician who hoped to return home to serve her community.
