Here I explain how I swapped a 5.7L Hemi engine into my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. I believe this is the first video created that covers all of the question marks. 40,000+ mile update coming someday... 0:18 shopping list 1:03 note on wire harness 1:30 note on motor mounts 2:28 Day 1 2:53 bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts, and alignment pins 3:13 AC lines 4:58 Day 2 7:06 difference between 4.7 and 5.7 motor mounts shown 7:14 fuel line and evap line 8:41 setting the engine 10:24 reassembly 11:46 4.7 and 5.7 cruise control 12:03 throttle position sensor (TPS) 13:07 Day 3 13:48 Day 4 and Y-pipe 14:38 Day 5 and first start 15:23 exhaust welding 15:46 performance test (This is not a true representation of the power difference due to the 5.7 motor incorrectly being paired with the 4.7 torque converter. Now with the proper torque converter, RPMs are able to stay much lower during acceleration. Updated 06/19/26) IMPORTANT NOTES: ***This information applies precisely to the 2004 year. Going backwards or forwards by year will inevitably have variations*** ABS You'll want the 5.7 ABS module for cruise control to work properly. They look the same but if you take them apart you'll find the circuit boards are completely different and they're a different part number from the 4.7 to 5.7. The 5.7 ABS module part number I used is P52121407AB. PCM I'm sure there are many PCM part numbers that work, but the one I used is P56029161AB. SKIM If you have SKIM, permanently remove the module BEFORE plugging in your new PCM. If the VIN in your PCM does not match the one in your SKIM, the SKIM won't allow the engine to run. The SKIM cannot be reprogrammed, and you cannot write your original 4.7 VIN to your new 5.7 PCM because it will trip the 5.7 ABS module's “VIN Mismatch” code and cause the ABS & Brake dash lights to stay on. 5.7 ABS modules will ONLY work with 5.7 PCM VINs. I suspect this is due to the 8th-digit “D” in a 5.7 VIN vs. the “N” in a 4.7 VIN. So, SKIM has to go. CAUTION: If you plug in your new PCM before removing the SKIM module it will SKIM-lock your PCM and you'll need to buy another one or pay hundreds for a SKIM delete PCM programming service. TORQUE CONVERTER Get the torque converter made for the 5.7 engine. The 4.7 torque converter will function with the 5.7, but they do have different stall speeds to handle the differences in power output. 1st and 2nd gear are underpowered with the 4.7 torque converter behind the 5.7 engine. Also, using the 4.7 torque converter throws off the PCM's expected input-output speeds of the transmission/wheels, requiring you to use a tire revolution per mile programming hack for cruise control to function (easily accomplished via this scan tool:    • Perfect scan tool for Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep?...  ) PERFORMANCE TEST (15:46) Since I still had the 4.7's torque converter in, this is NOT an accurate example of how the RPMs and speed should relate. With the proper 5.7 torque converter, my RPMs stay much lower because both sides of torque converter fluid-couple together at lower RPMs. It's now very rare that I exceed 4000 RPMs. COMPATIBILITY Generally, compatible years are 2002-2003 | 2004-2005 | 2006-2009. DO NOT USE ELECTRONICS FROM INCOMPATIBLE YEARS! ALWAYS try to find the exact matching year.
