In January 1917 a retired British general told a London war diarist a story about his own birth: he was born during the Mutiny in India and hidden by a local man near Delhi. Years later he commanded the Indian Corps in France. By his own count it never had more than 25,000 men, took 25,000 casualties, and left for Mesopotamia "without a Thank-you from anybody except the Prince of Wales." From Charles à Court Repington, *The First World War 1914–1918*, Vol. I (1920), public domain. Jay narrates, with Meera and Soons, in English and Hindi. The book names no individual Indian soldier. If your family has one, tell us in the comments.
