The eighteenth time I cornered him about marriage, after ten years of wearing down the soles of my shoes chasing him, Graham suddenly said yes.
It didn’t make sense. Every previous time had ended in absolute carnage.
The worst had been last spring. In a fever of desperation, I had dragged his family’s foster sister up to the roof of our apartment building, screaming at him to finally choose. He hadn’t even hesitated. He jumped off the ledge, falling through an awning below. It took two weeks in the ICU and three surgeries to bring him back from the brink of death. When his eyes finally fluttered open, his cracked lips curled into a faint, mocking smile.
"Still want me to choose?" he had whispered.
He didn't want to marry me. He never had.
And yet, yesterday morning, he woke up a completely different man. He rushed me to Tiffany’s to pick out a solitaire, dropped thousands on an off-the-rack silk bridal gown, booked a two-week honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast, and scheduled an eight o’clock appointment at City Hall for the following morning.
The whole thing felt like walking through someone else’s dream.
That night, lying against his chest in the dark, I couldn't stop asking him why. Over and over, nudging him awake each time his breathing slowed. Finally, he turned his face toward mine under the pale streetlight. His smile was twisted, tighter and uglier than any weeping face I’d ever seen.
"Because I love you, Willa," he said.
It wasn't until early the next morning that I saw the text preview on his lock screen. Sent to Brynn:
"I have to marry that woman."
"I got a message from myself ten years in the future."
"You were beaten to death by her hands."
"For you, I will spend the rest of my life chained to a lunatic. Whatever hell I have to endure, keeping you safe is worth it."
"A lunatic. That woman."
The words went through my chest like twin nails, pinning me to the floor.
