Gettysburg’s Stony Hill adjacent to the Wheatfield will see brutal fighting on July 2, 1863. Today, due to heavy foliage, most of this small ridge is difficult to view. To understand the fighting in the Wheatfield, one must also understand how the area known as the Stony Hill was important and why it was mentioned in many after battle accounts. Major St. Clair Mulholland, 116th Pennsylvania Infantry would note “Having entered a dense woods we began to ascend a hill, where large bowlders of rocks impeded our progress” This video, gives the viewer the opportunity to see the “lay of the land” and what the men fighting on this hill would have perceived.
