Queen Mary 2 is the last true ocean liner on Earth — and next month, the fastest liner ever built, the SS United States, is scheduled to be sunk off Florida as an artificial reef. In this documentary we go inside the engineering that makes Cunard's Queen Mary 2 completely different from every modern cruise ship: a sharper hull, about 40% more steel, lifeboats 82 feet above the sea, jet-derived gas turbines under the funnel and four propulsion pods with no rudder at all.
We follow her transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York, the ice that sank Titanic and the International Ice Patrol that still guards the route, a real mid-Atlantic rescue, and the class system that survives in her restaurants. Then the big question: if Queen Mary 2 is this good, why will no one ever build another ocean liner? Every number in this video is checked — sources below.
