Europe's response to high energy costs

On 6 October, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave a speech in the plenary of the European Parliament. She addressed issues concerning the upcoming European Council - the quarterly meeting of heads of states in Brussels. The most pressing among them: energy security during the upcoming winter months. Europe must respond to high energy costs with targeted help for the most vulnerable. Meanwhile, it must continue to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels through clean energy, stronger grids and more electrification. President von der Leyen argued that a more ambitious long-term EU budget is needed to invest in energy security, competitiveness, defence and other shared European priorities.
