Subtropical Storm Josephine is intensifying offshore as North Carolina's Outer Banks faces severe coastal damage. Powerful waves and ocean overwash have damaged approximately 800 feet of Highway 12 near the Pea Island Visitor Center, while another 1,800 feet of protective dunes have been lost, cutting off the main road connection to Hatteras Island.
Emergency ferry service between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe is scheduled to begin Thursday, October 22, as visitor evacuation restrictions remain in effect. Coastal flood warnings forecast 2–4 feet of inundation in vulnerable parts of Hatteras Island, with dangerous surf and additional high tides threatening repair efforts.
Josephine formed with 65 mph sustained winds, with further strengthening forecast over the Atlantic as it transitions away from subtropical characteristics. Stay informed with the latest Josephine storm updates, Highway 12 damage, Hatteras evacuations, ferry operations, and coastal flood warnings.
