Black Point near Lake Jasper in the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, WA is known for its spectacular black hexagonal basalt columns formed from lava cooling when it reached the ocean 135 million years ago. It is an excellent place to camp, rock hop, beach walk, and on a good day, surf. It is only accessible by 4WD. The escarpment at the end of the beach is a 4km return walk up a steep sandy track. 0:00 Black Point sign 0:27 Hexagonal black basalt columns 1:05 Long view of the escarpment at the end of Black Point beach 1:30 Escarpment ascent, near vertical climb along a sandy track 2:25 View from the escarpment 2:38 Unusual rock erosion on the escarpment 3:27 Escarpment descent 4:10 Eroded rounded rocks below the escarpment 4:21 Are these waves rideable? 4:54 Seagull 5:13 More mesmerising waves 6:02 Basalt rock formation up close 6:56 A quiet reflecting pool...no it's not 7:34 Rounded eroded black stone ... 7:57...between walls of solid basalt 8:25 Pair of seagulls, Meal Moth (Pyralis farinalis), Swift-footed Rock Crab 8:42 Detail of tops of hexagonal basalt columns 9:21 Rock pools and inhabitants 9:41 Wave breaking over rocks Share the experience as we capture the essence of hiking trails and travel in Australia, non-narrated.
