A $286.43 grocery receipt wasn’t even enough to feed Rachel’s family for two full weeks. Some months, their food spending approached $1,400—and the money was only part of what was wearing them down. At 42, Rachel and her husband Adrian made an unexpected decision: move their two children from Washington to the Philippines for one year. Rachel expected lower prices and simpler ingredients, but her first Philippine supermarket trip challenged those expectations. Imported cereal and cheese were expensive, and some local products had ingredient lists just as long as the American versions. Everything changed when Adrian’s aunt took Rachel shopping at a public market near Dumaguete. Rachel discovered that saving money wasn’t about finding cheaper versions of the same American groceries. Her family had to change the grocery cart—and eventually, their entire relationship with food and time. This is a story about family, relocation, food costs, culture shock, and discovering that loving America doesn’t mean another way of living can’t work better for your family right now.
