Furtwängler's 1937 recording of the 5th Symphony. Newly restored in 2021/22. Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 1. Allegro con brio (0:08) 2. Andante con moto (7:48) 3. Allegro (18:04) 4. Allegro - Presto (23:52) Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded on October 10/November 3, 1937 at the Beethovensaal, Berlin Recently a subscriber suggested that all versions of this recording online were disappointing, and on investigation, we agreed with that assessment. Especially since the recording from 1937 has been handed down to us in excellent quality. We had planned to restore this one in October, but since we had already pulled the source for evaluation, there seemed little point in waiting. Furtwängler recorded this symphony numerous times, including one of his earliest sessions in the 1920s. The present recording with the Berlin Philharmonic is from the late-middle period in his career, and is less expansive than his later one from 1954.
