December, 1804.
Night had fallen over the Missouri River.
The wind came across the frozen prairie with almost nothing to stop it.
Inside Fort Mandan, men crowded close to the fire.
Outside, the sentries were struggling to stay at their posts.
The cold was so severe that guards sometimes had to be replaced every hour.
Hunters came back with frostbitten hands and feet.
Clothing stiffened.
Exposed skin went numb.
And on some mornings, the temperature was falling toward forty below zero.
The Americans had built walls.
They had roofs.
They had fires burning.
And still the winter was getting through.
But only a few miles away, Native families were facing the same wind, the same snow, and the same deadly temperatures.
And they were living inside houses that, to an outsider, barely looked like houses at all.
Low domes rising from the ground.
