Exploring the UK's Tallest Tudor Gatehouse where Henry VIII famously stayed at Layer Marney Tower was an incredible experience! Layer Marney Tower is an absolute hidden gem located in the North Essex countryside just outside Tiptree. In this faceless, no-commentary cinematic tour, you can relax to background music as we wander around one of the most magnificent Tudor estates in England and step back into British history. ABOUT LAYER MARNEY TOWER: It was built during the first half of King Henry VIII’s reign by Henry, 1st Lord Marney, who was a trusted courtier and adviser to the King. This spectacular tower holds a brilliant historical claim to fame: back in August 1522, Henry VIII himself travelled right here to Essex and stayed at the tower for a two-night royal sleepover! After Lord Marney’s death in 1523, the build was left to his son John to complete. However, John passed away two years later, leaving the project unfinished. Walking around the grounds and taking in the deep red brick buildings, it’s amazing to think one of England's most famous monarchs slept right here over 500 years ago. We also head inside the adjacent St Mary’s Church. It's just as grand inside this peaceful building, with the largest of the tombs marking the final resting place of Lord Marney. Whether you're a history lover or looking for an amazing UK travel destination, Layer Marney Tower is well worth a visit to experience the timeless atmosphere. 📍 Location: Layer Marney Tower, Roundish Road, Colchester, Essex, CO5 9US Prices: Adults £12:00 Children: Under 13 Free 13+/Students £7:00 Days open and event prices may differ - please check their website before travelling.
