The low-slung rig with two guns hanging at hip level is the picture in every Western ever shot. Working cowboys almost never carried that way.
A holster had to survive eight hours on a horse, and a rig that swung loose at the hip did not. Real gear sat tight on the belt, went into a coat pocket, or rode in a boot, where it stayed put through roping, branding and a long trot home. The Hollywood version was built for the camera, where a fast draw had to read clearly from twenty feet away.
In this video:
✅ What working cowboys actually carried, and where
✅ Why the low-slung buscadero rig was a movie invention
✅ How a horse changes everything about where a gun can sit
✅ Which rigs show up in period photographs and catalogs
✅ Why the Hollywood look won out in the public imagination
✅ What a usable working rig looks like on a real horse
The movies sold the draw. The work sold the holster.
