In this video, I review Gregory Naber's Topology, Geometry and Gauge Fields: Foundations, one of the most insightful introductions to the mathematics underlying modern gauge theory.
Rather than beginning with abstract definitions, Naber starts from a profound physical problem: Dirac's magnetic monopole. From this seemingly simple question emerges a journey through topology, differential geometry, fiber bundles, connections, and gauge fields.
I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the book, who it is best suited for, and why I believe its famous Chapter 0 is worth reading on its own. More than an introduction to mathematical physics, this book offers a compelling explanation of why topology and geometry became indispensable tools in modern theoretical physics.
