Learn how to rig a Marlin lure hook set step-by-step with the exact gear and techniques that serious offshore fishermen use. In this tutorial, I’ll show you everything you need to build a strong and IGFA-legal hook rig that’s ready for big-game fishing in Cabo San Lucas or anywhere you chase billfish. Supplies you’ll need: 49-strand 950 lb Malin cable RM-5 swages (x2) 3/8” heat shrink tubing Loop protector Fudo10/0 needle-eye hook 300-400–600 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader Step-by-step process: Cut your Malin cable (always cut extra). Crimp the cable to the hook eye with an RM-5 swage. Slide a piece of 3/8” heat shrink over the crimp, extending about ¼” past both ends. Apply heat carefully. Measure your lure and set the hook so the eye sits just inside the skirt — IGFA legal and deadly effective. Before crimping the other end, install a loop protector for your leader connection. This exact hook rig setup has landed me countless Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, and even big Dorado. There are many ways to rig, but this method is simple, strong, and reliable.
