America's New Solar Panel Could Make Today's Panels Obsolete

California-based Tandem PV combines a conventional silicon solar cell with a thin perovskite photovoltaic layer placed above it, allowing the two materials to absorb different parts of the solar spectrum instead of forcing a single silicon cell to handle everything alone. In internal testing, the company reported a 30.4% efficiency result on a 100-square-centimeter demonstration mini-module, significantly above the low-twenty-percent range of many mainstream silicon panels today. The company is now scaling the technology toward full-size commercial modules at its Fremont, California manufacturing facility, where it is targeting roughly 28% efficiency for initial large-format products. Rather than replacing silicon entirely, Tandem PV’s four-terminal architecture is designed to work with existing silicon technologies while adding a second solar cell on top to increase power density from the same physical footprint. Major challenges still remain, including large-area coating uniformity, manufacturing yield, certification, long-term perovskite durability, cost, and proving that the modules can survive decades outdoors. If those barriers can be solved, the technology that eventually makes today’s solar panels look outdated may not eliminate silicon at all — it may simply make silicon work together with another material.
