The case attracted national attention after Ayush’s Eid prayer photographs went viral. His father, pharmaceutical businessman Devraj Singh Malik, accused Chandni Qureshi and her family of brainwashing and forcibly converting his son for financial gain. Shamli Police registered a case under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 and relevant BNS provisions. Chandni and her father, Islam Qureshi, were arrested but later granted bail on July 24, 2026. The FIR and criminal proceedings remain pending. The controversy intensified when a family-released video showed Ayush performing Hindu rituals and apparently announcing his “ghar wapsi.” Ayush later alleged that he had been threatened and unlawfully confined at home since June 4—claims rejected by his father. His friend Mohammad Sultan then filed a habeas corpus petition. On September 9, Justice Sandeep Jain ordered Ayush to be produced before the court. After hearing Ayush directly on September 16, the Allahabad High Court found no lawful justification for restricting his liberty and set him free. The court emphasized that Articles 21 and 25 of the Indian Constitution protect an adult’s right to choose a religion, residence and life partner, even when the family disagrees.
