Join us as we explore the incredible Giant’s Causeway on the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland — a spectacular landscape of around 40,000 basalt columns, formed by volcanic activity around 60 million years ago. The distinctive hexagonal columns were created as molten lava cooled and contracted, producing one of the world's most remarkable geological landscapes.
But the Giant’s Causeway isn't just about geology — it’s steeped in Irish mythology and the legendary story of Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill). According to legend, Finn built the causeway across the sea to Scotland to confront the Scottish giant Benandonner. When Finn realised just how enormous his rival was, his wife Oonagh came up with a clever plan involving disguising Finn as a baby! Benandonner fled back to Scotland, tearing up the causeway behind him.
We'll take in the amazing basalt columns, dramatic cliffs, Atlantic views and some of the famous features associated with the legend, including Finn McCool's Boot.
The Giant’s Causeway became Northern Ireland’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, recognised for both its exceptional natural beauty and its importance to understanding Earth's geological history.
