August Lindt is a cheerful yet deeply eccentric German pretzel salt inspector from Düsseldorf who spent a tumultuous three-month vacation traveling across the United States. While his public persona is that of an enthusiastic globetrotter and the host of his own travel-themed audio program, his adventures are marked by bizarre mishaps, including an arrest at Graceland for sneaking into Elvis Presley's private bathroom. Beneath his jovial passion for tourism lies an incredibly dark, morbid streak, punctuated by his recurring, highly specific declarations of his intent to end his own life by tying himself to the Hollywood sign and setting himself on fire.
