The Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse hike is a stunning adventure in Banff National Park, Alberta. It begins at Lake Louise and takes you through breathtaking mountain scenery, ending at the historic teahouse built in 1927. At the teahouse, you can enjoy light refreshments while soaking in views of glaciers and towering peaks. Canadian Rockies Hike.
June 9/2023 Spring Hike, Alberta Canada
First of all, I would like to say, be prepared to deal with hundreds of people around the lake. If you are planning on driving, get there early as the parking lots fill up fast. Parking is $21.50 CAD for the day.
For the first part of the hike, you will be walking along the right side of Lake Louise. This trail is fairly wide and flat. Be prepared for lots of people on this part of the hike. There were a few nice little streams running into the lake. At 2.2k you will arrive at the end of the lake. The trail is not nearly as busy once you pass the end of the lake. This is the distance from the Hotel. On your right there are some high cliffs, keep an eye out for mountain climbers. At 2.8k you will arrive at the boardwalk section. This area is really cool as you can see the water coming down from the glaciers full of rock flour mixing with water from the lake. This rock flour is what gives Lake Louise its unique color. As you proceed further up the trail you will start and hear waterfalls. Just go left off the trail to see these beautiful little waterfalls. The water is a creamy white color as this water is directly from the glaciers up above. Now you will start and get a little elevation gain. The trail takes you into the trees for a little bit, but soon you will start to get views in al directions. The trail now gets a lot narrower. As you continue the trail opens up even more and you will see the stunning Victoria Glacier in front of you. The birds were also very happy as they were singing like crazy. To your left you will start and see the moraines below the glaciers. These were carved out from the glaciers years ago as the glacier pushed rock debris to the sides of the glacier. There were still some patches of snow around the trail. The trail now gets a little steeper. The trail will level out and you now get a stunning view. There is a section on the trail where you will be walking along a cliff ledge. It’s fairly wide but if you have a fear of heights just take this portion slow. Looking back, you can get a nice view of Lake Louise. After the ledge the trail will get steeper as you work your way onto the moraine. At the start of the moraine there is a rock here that a lot of people stand for Instagram photos, with Lake Louise in the background. Now you will have stunning 360 views. At 5.6k there is a lookout, and this is where the switchbacks will start. And the trail will get rockier and steeper. As you go higher the views just keep getting more stunning. At 6.1k you will arrive at the tea house. There are a lot of benches to sit on here to enjoy your lunch. The tea house also serves beverages, snacks and souvenirs. The trail does continue from here to get you closer to the glaciers. This trail is not maintained, and you will gain another couple hundred meters of elevation gain. If you have the time and energy, it is well worth it for the views.
After our lunch and a beer, it was time to head back down. One thing that is nice about this out and back trail is you get to see all the views you missed on the way back. I love this hike and I have done it many times. If you like glaciers, then this is the hike for you. This trail is not as busy as the trail up to the Lake Agnes tea house, which is nice. I really enjoyed hiking with Nadia, Lana and Greg. Our maximum elevation was 2038 meters, and our total distance was 12.4k out and back, with an elevation gain of 369 meters.
The name Plain of Six Glaciers comes from the hanging glaciers of Mount Aberdeen, Lefroy, and Victoria, as well as the Lower Victoria and Lefroy glaciers and the hanging glacier on Popes Peak.
