#177: Jamie Young (Soccer) Ruthless Standards and Life After the Gloves

Jamie reflects on a year of major transition, from retiring as a player and moving back to Brisbane, to completing his PhD and working out what life looks like beyond the dressing room. After seven seasons with Brisbane Roar, a championship-winning stint at Western United and his final years at Melbourne City, he speaks with real honesty about walking away from the game at peace. The conversation goes back to Jamie’s early years in Brisbane, where a mix of sports, hand-eye coordination and a Scottish dad who did not want him to be a goalkeeper all shaped the start of his career. He talks about leaving school as a teenager for a trial at Reading, growing up quickly in the UK system, and the ruthless reality of football environments where performance, selection and survival were never guaranteed. Jamie also opens up on playing for England at youth level, competing with future Premier League players, and the imposter syndrome that can come from being around big names before you really know who you are. He reflects on how football has changed, why coaching is less abrasive now, and why elite sport still needs accountability, edge and people who can handle the big moments.
