How do billionaires get paid when their salary is tiny? On America's 400 highest-income tax returns, only $4.47 of every $100 was wages, while $60.45 came from selling assets (IRS, tax year 2014).
Jeff Bezos's salary is $81,840 a year, yet he sold about $5.65 billion of Amazon stock in 2025. We open the books on how the richest Americans get cash without a paycheck: dividends, scheduled share sales, loans against stock, and the tax rule that resets gains at death. We use public SEC filings, IRS data and Federal Reserve numbers, and show where $100 of income goes for the 400 biggest incomes in America, with the caveats.
