Nigeria’s social safety net programme is facing scrutiny after the Auditor-General for the Federation flagged ₦33.75 billion in cash transfers that could not be fully verified as reaching genuine beneficiaries. The funds were distributed to more than 3.29 million households across 35 states in 2023, but auditors say beneficiary records needed to confirm the payments were not provided. The audit also identified other concerns, including ₦36.74 billion paid without required pre-payment checks, ₦4.6 billion without supporting vouchers and ₦350 million allocated for beneficiary enrolment that could not be accounted for. BudgIT Country Director Vahyala Kwaga joins the conversation.
