“Le Chant du départ” (translated in English as “The Song of Departure” ) is a French revolutionary and imperial anthem of the First French Empire, written in 1794 during the French Revolution. The lyrics were by poet Marie-Joseph Chénier and the music by Étienne Méhul. It became especially prominent under Napoleon Bonaparte, who considered it a sort of national anthem during his rule. The song is a stirring call to arms, celebrating patriotism, sacrifice, and liberty. Structured as a dialogue between various members of society—like a mother, a soldier, and a child—it highlights the collective commitment to the French Republic and the defense of its ideals. Its martial spirit and emotional appeal made it a favorite for revolutionary and Napoleonic causes. “Le Chant du départ” was also both a patriotic and a marching song. It was designed to inspire revolutionary zeal and national pride, with powerful lyrics about liberty, sacrifice, and the fight against tyranny. Musically, it has a strong, rousing rhythm that made it ideal for military parades and troops marching into battle. In fact, it was often referred to as “the brother of the Marseillaise” because of its similar revolutionary and patriotic energy. Under Napoleon, it was used frequently to motivate soldiers and rally public support, making it one of the most iconic martial songs of its time. 0:00 - Intro 0:05 - "Le Chant du départ" #declaredanthems #europe #anthems #anthemsong #european #nationalanthem #nationalanthems #anthem #empire #imperial #france #french #napoleon #napoleonic #napoleonicera
