In This Lesson:
Sun's Movement and Shadows: Shadows change in length and direction throughout the day because of the Sun's changing position as it appears to move regularly across the sky, rising in the east and setting in the west.
Changes in Shadow Length and Direction: When the Sun is low in the sky during the morning and evening, shadows are long. Around noon, when the Sun is high in the sky, shadows are short and extend beneath the object. The direction of a shadow also shifts throughout the day, always extending in the exact opposite direction of the Sun. The
Sundial: A sundial is a tool that was used in the past to tell the approximate time of day. It works by relying on the regular and constant changes in a shadow's position caused by the Sun's daily movement.
Tracking Shadow Movement: An activity recording a wooden stick's
shadow with flags every hour demonstrates these changes. It shows that the shadow's length gradually decreases until noon, and then gradually increases until sunset. This observation confirms that the direction and length of a shadow change continuously due to the regular movement of the Sun.
