1. Introduction
Waste management is one of the most important challenges in modern society. Improper disposal of waste leads to environmental pollution, health hazards, and difficulty in recycling processes.
Segregating waste into categories such as metal, wet, and dry waste at the source is essential for effective waste management.
To solve this problem, we have developed a Smart Waste Segregation System using Arduino, which automatically detects and separates different types of waste using sensors and servo motors.
Objectives
The main objectives of this project are:
• To automatically segregate waste into different categories
• To reduce human effort in waste sorting
• To promote eco-friendly waste management
• To improve recycling efficiency
• To develop a smart and automated system using Arduino
Working Principle
This system works on the integration of sensors, Arduino microcontroller, and servo motors.
Step-by-Step Working:
1. Waste Input
Waste is inserted from the top into a sloped surface so that it can move automatically downward.
Metal Detection
• The waste first passes through the metal sensor
• If the waste is metallic, the sensor detects it
• Arduino processes the signal
• Servo motor 1 opens the gate
• Metal waste falls into the metal bin
Wet Waste Detection
• If the waste is not metal, it moves forward
• The rain sensor (wet sensor) checks moisture
• If wet waste is detected
• Servo motor 2 opens
• Wet waste falls into the wet bin
Dry Waste Collection
• If the waste is neither metal nor wet
• It directly falls into the dry waste bin
