Ancient humans didn't drink to get drunk. They drank to stay alive. Ten million years ago, our ape ancestors ate the fermented fruit other animals avoided, and their bodies became about 40 times better at breaking down alcohol. For them, alcohol meant food. Later, ancient humans discovered that fruit, honey and wild grain left in water would start to bubble. Thirteen thousand years ago, long before farming, people brewed the oldest beer ever found, in the same cave where they buried their dead. And in China, 9,000 years ago, people fermented rice, honey and fruit in clay jars. This is the real story of how alcohol began: why ancient humans only drank at special moments, why the drink was shared, how it kept scattered groups from falling apart, and why some archaeologists think beer may even have helped start farming.
