The Kham, or traditional Wancho log drum, is one of the most remarkable symbols of the cultural heritage of the Wancho people of Arunachal Pradesh. Carved from a large tree trunk, this traditional instrument represents the wisdom, craftsmanship, unity, and ancestral traditions of our community. Its origins go back to the traditional village life of our ancestors, although the exact date when the practice began is not documented.
Basic Use:
Before modern communication systems existed, the Kham played a vital role in informing villagers about important events. Different rhythms and patterns could communicate different messages, including warnings of approaching danger, wild animal threats, fires, community gatherings, festivals, and the death of respected elders. When villagers heard a familiar rhythm, they understood that a particular event had occurred and responded accordingly. In this way, the log drum served as a traditional communication system that connected the entire village.
Importance:
The Kham is also closely associated with traditional celebrations, dances, and community gatherings, including the Wancho festival of Oriah. Its deep, powerful sound brings people together and adds rhythm and spirit to cultural performances. The drum is not merely a musical instrument; it is a living expression of Wancho identity, artistic skill, and collective memory.
