Nearly 12,000 years ago, communities in southeastern Türkiye raised enormous stone pillars and covered them with mysterious imagery. What brought these people together—and what did their creations mean?
In this episode of Histories Mysteries, we explore Göbekli Tepe through archaeological discoveries, scientific studies, and clearly labeled reconstructions.
From skilled stoneworkers and communal meals to possible rituals and disputed astronomical interpretations, we examine the evidence behind the theories. We also explore research published in September 2026 that adds another dimension to the story: burials beneath building floors and further clues to everyday life.
Was Göbekli Tepe a sacred gathering place, a living community, or both? And does the familiar story of its deliberate burial capture what actually happened?
