In 1898, thousands of gold seekers arrived at Port Valdez convinced they had found a shorter way north. The maps showed a route. The advertisements promised an “All-American” passage into Alaska’s interior. Few of the people stepping ashore knew how much of that promise had ever been tested. Within months, Valdez became the starting point for one of the least remembered journeys of the Klondike Gold Rush. Men and women carried everything they owned toward the mountains, following a path most of them had never seen.
