Learn how to send data from an STM32 to your PC using UART and STM32CubeIDE! In this beginner-friendly tutorial, we'll configure USART2 on the NUCLEO-F446RE, transmit our first Hello World message, and send changing data using a button-press counter. UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) is one of the most useful communication interfaces in embedded systems. Whether you're working with microcontrollers, sensors, robotics, or other embedded devices, understanding UART is an important skill. In this tutorial, we'll cover: How UART works, including asynchronous and full-duplex communication Baud rates, TX/RX lines, and 8N1 data framing Configuring USART2 in STM32CubeMX Using the onboard ST-LINK virtual COM port Transmitting messages with HAL_UART_Transmit() Understanding message buffers, transmission lengths, and timeouts Using snprintf() to transmit changing variables Building a button-press counter and displaying the results in a serial terminal I'm using the STM32 NUCLEO-F446RE development board, but the same fundamentals apply to many other STM32 microcontrollers. This tutorial is also part of my autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) project. Eventually, I'll use communication between my STM32 and NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano to exchange sensor information and system commands. Today, we're starting with UART transmission from the STM32 to a PC. In the next tutorial, we'll explore receiving UART data and using incoming information in our microcontroller.
