What does it actually mean to be intelligent? We often think of intelligence as knowledge, academics, problem-solving, or how quickly someone can understand something. But there is another kind of intelligence that affects almost every part of our lives: emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize what is happening emotionally within ourselves and others, understand it, and choose how to respond rather than simply reacting. In this halaqah, we explore intelligence, emotional intelligence, and what Islam teaches us about both. We discuss how easily our minds can turn observations into assumptions, how to separate what actually happened from the story we created about it, how to read people without automatically assuming the worst, and how to become more aware of what others may be carrying beneath the surface. Most importantly, we look at these ideas through an Islamic lens. Through lessons from the Qur’an, the Prophets, and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we reflect on emotions, assumptions, empathy, anger, grief, forgiveness, self-control, and good character. A simple framework to take with you: Intelligence asks: “What happened?” Emotional intelligence asks: “What is happening inside me because of what happened?” And Islamic emotional intelligence adds: “Now what would Allah want me to do with this feeling?” Islam does not teach us to become emotionless. It teaches us how to understand our emotions, discipline our reactions, think well of others, and respond in a way that reflects wisdom and beautiful character. You may not always control the first emotion that enters your heart, but you can work on what happens next.
