The father approaches Him with a mixture of hope and disappointment and says: “If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus immediately challenges his thinking. The question isn't whether Jesus can. The question is whether you can believe. The father responds with one of the most honest prayers in Scripture: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Rev. Terry K. Anderson reminds us that genuine Christians can still have genuine questions. There are seasons when you love God but don't understand Him. You pray—but don't understand why the situation hasn't changed. You believe—but your faith feels weak. You know what God has done for other people, but you're still waiting for Him to do something in your situation. That doesn't mean you have to run away from God. Bring your questions to Him. God is not intimidated by your questions. Abraham had questions. Moses had questions. David had questions. Job had questions. Jeremiah had questions. Even Jesus cried out from the cross. A faith that cannot be tested is a faith that cannot be trusted. Sometimes mature faith sounds like this: “God, I don't understand what You're doing—but I still trust You.” This sermon also speaks powerfully to parents carrying the burden of a child they cannot fix. The father couldn't deliver his son. The disciples couldn't deliver his son. But Jesus said: “Bring him to Me.” Maybe you've prayed for your child for years. Maybe you've watched someone you love make destructive decisions. Maybe you've done everything you know how to do and nothing seems to work. Keep bringing them to Jesus. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Don't underestimate what Jesus can do with the person or situation you've almost given up on. When the boy was finally brought to Jesus, Christ commanded the spirit to leave him. The boy fell down looking as though he were dead—but Jesus reached down, took him by the hand, and raised him up. That's what Jesus does. He can raise what looks dead. He can restore what looks broken. He can deliver what you cannot deliver. He can handle what you cannot fix. And when the disciples later asked why they had failed, Jesus pointed them back to prayer. Some battles require persistent dependence upon God. It may not happen immediately. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. You may be standing today at the crossroads of hope and despair, but you don't have to possess perfect faith to come to Jesus. Bring Him the faith you have.
