The moai drew me to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), one of the most remote and mysterious places on Earth. By the time I left, I realized there was so much more to the island than I had imagined. Over several days, I watched the sunset at Tahai, stood before the stone giants at Ahu Tongariki, walked through the quarry at Rano Raraku, and explored Orongo on the rim of Rano Kau. I also returned before dawn for a solo expedition—hiking through the darkness, past dozens of glowing eyes to reach the rim of a volcano, just to watch the sunrise.
