On December 26, 1947, the forecast said occasional flurries. Twenty-four hours later, New York City lay under 26 inches of snow, the most in its history. The subways stopped. Commuter trains ran twelve hours late. Thousands of cars vanished under white mounds. And the biggest city in America needed about 30,000 men and more than a week to dig itself out.
It was called the Blizzard of 1947, but there was almost no wind. It was a heavy, silent snowstorm that came in from the wrong direction, out of an ocean nobody was watching.
In this New York City snowstorm documentary:
Why the Weather Bureau never saw it coming
Hour by hour: how a city of millions stopped, from Grand Central to Times Square
Why most of the dead were shoveling, not freezing
How the city dug out: shovels, sewers, rivers and 534 towed cars
What happened in December 1948, when the snow came again
Why almost nobody remembers it
We mentioned this storm briefly in our film about who invented the snowblower. This is the full story.
No free film of this storm survives in the public archives, so every scene in this video is a reconstruction created with AI and labeled on screen. The facts, numbers and quotes come from the newspapers, magazines and records listed below.
