Hey guys, I'm back to announce our pregnancy and to discuss our experience with having a very scary experience with NIPT and amniocentesis. I've been gone because we had a positive aneuploidy detection of trisomy 4q on an expanded NIPT. The test claims there is only a 0.2% false positive rate, so invasive testing is recommended. Although NIPT isn't diagnostic, it claims high accuracy rates and is now commonly recommended by doctors. A positive detection is treated as a likely diagnosis, so we had to face the idea of having a child with likely severe intellectual and physical disabilities. It was a very hard time and I've met many other people along this journey who also had bad experiences with NIPT such as false positives or inconclusive results. While NIPT can be useful, I want to raise awareness of the limitations of it that it's not as accurate as claimed, that expanded panels (duplications/microdeletion panels) have far lower accuracy. NIPT can cause unnecessary invasive testing and psychological distress and that's not talked about enough despite the increasing popularity of the testing for pregnant people of any age. Thanks for watching and hope it can help somebody.
I still have GD so technically still "high risk" but ehhhh
