Julie Roland Part 2: Civility, Democracy & a Navy Commander’s Take on War | It’s Not Black or White

Julie Roland Part 2: Civility, Democracy & a Navy Commander’s Take on War | It’s Not Black or White Navy veteran and TEDx speaker Julie Roland is back. In Part 2, Tim Stevenson and Diane Blakeley go deeper on the issues that keep all of us up at night: bot campaigns and election threats, how to argue with people you disagree with, and how we treat the people who serve. Julie shares the military lesson that changed how she debates: the way to win an argument isn’t to beat the other person. She talks about the USS Lincoln sailors coming home, and why, in her mission commander training, closing the Strait of Hormuz was always the first move everyone expected. She also explains why real patriotism means fixing the leaky roof, not pretending it isn’t there. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Fighting the bot campaigns 1:02 Real threats to our elections 1:44 Julie on a growing movement, and whether she’d run for office 2:50 Diane on Orange County, Hillary and 2016 4:51 Why democracy and decency matter 6:57 How to actually win an argument 8:04 Compassionate curiosity (and when to save your energy) 8:46 Misdirected frustration 10:29 “Gentle in a strong way” 11:27 Leaders who represent everyone 13:03 The USS Lincoln 15:30 Taking care of our sailors 18:19 A war Congress never declared 20:33 Diane on the president and Iran 21:54 A mission commander on the Strait of Hormuz 22:47 Conflicts of interest 24:35 “I’m Italian”: Diane on dual citizenship 25:57 What patriotism really is 26:50 If you love your house, fix the roof 27:40 The power of “we the people” 28:18 Where to find Julie Roland 💬 What does civility look like to you right now?
