“THE GOAT Chase! 🐐🔥 Sri Lanka Ne 430 Kar Diya | 2nd Highest ODI Chase Ever | SL vs ENG”
Sri Lanka pulled off one of the greatest run chases in cricket history, beating England by 2 wickets in the third match of the ODI Tri-Series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 22. Chasing 430, they got there in 49.5 overs with one ball to spare. It is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind only South Africa’s 438 chase of 435 against Australia in 2006.
England looked set to win after posting 429/4, led by Harry Brook, who smashed 202 off just 116 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history and the first double hundred by an English batter in men’s ODIs.
Sri Lanka lost two early wickets, but then came a counterattack. Pavan Rathnayake and Dasun Shanaka added 133 runs for the fourth wicket, with Shanaka smashing 97 off just 50 balls with 8 sixes. Janith Liyanage then took charge, finishing unbeaten on 55 and sealing the win with a six in the final over. A massive 859 runs were scored in the match, the second-highest match aggregate in ODI history.
This was Sri Lanka’s first win in the tri-series and England’s second straight defeat, which hurts their hopes of reaching the final on October 31.
In this video, I break down Brook’s record innings, Sri Lanka’s chase over by over, and what this wild game says about the Rawalpindi pitch and the tri-series.
