Most people think they know Indonesia because they have been to Bali. They have not seen Indonesia. They have seen the opening sentence of one of the most extraordinary travel stories on earth.
Seventeen thousand islands. More active volcanoes than any other country on earth. The most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet. The oldest tropical rainforest in the world. The largest lizard alive. A spice trade history that literally changed the course of human civilization. And a culture so diverse that traveling through it feels like visiting several different countries at once.
In this documentary we go beyond Bali. We take you to the sacred temples and volcanic peaks of the island, then east to Lombok and the crater lake of Mount Rinjani, to Flores and the three differently colored lakes of Kelimutu, and to Komodo, the only place on earth where a three meter venomous predator that has been ruling these islands for millions of years still walks the land freely. We go underground into the coral reefs of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine environment on earth. Deep into the Sumatran rainforest, one of the last places where tigers, orangutans, rhinoceroses, and elephants share the same habitat. To the volcanic craters of Java at dawn and at night, where blue fire burns in an acid lake that has no equivalent anywhere on the planet. And into the cultural traditions of the Toraja and Asmat peoples, whose art and ceremony belong in a conversation with the finest human traditions on earth.
We also talk about the food. Because Indonesian cuisine, built on the spice islands that European empires went to war over, deserves far more international attention than it gets.
Indonesia is not a destination. It is a lifetime of destinations. And most people have only found the first one.
