How Did Ancient Humans Clean Their Teeth Before Toothbrushes?

How did ancient humans clean their teeth before toothbrushes existed? For 130,000 years there was no toothpaste and no dentist, and the history of the toothbrush is stranger than you think. It ends in your kitchen. We follow the clues from Neanderthal teeth with toothpick grooves, to ancient tartar that preserved what people ate and the medicine they chewed, to a 14,000-year-old tooth scraped with a sharp flint. Then come a beeswax filling, teeth drilled in Mehrgarh, neem datun and miswak twigs, Roman tooth powder (and worse), and the prisoner who invented the modern toothbrush. Finally, the twist: the real enemy was never dirt. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏱️ CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 Your nightly routine 0:50 The 130,000-year-old toothpick 2:19 What ancient tartar reveals 3:14 Neanderthal medicine 4:46 The oldest known dentistry 5:41 A 6,500-year-old beeswax filling 6:00 Drilling teeth in Mehrgarh 6:57 Chewing sticks: datun & miswak 8:11 Egyptian tooth powder 8:35 The Romans' disgusting secret 9:13 The first bristle toothbrush 9:22 William Addis and the prison toothbrush 9:58 The twist: it's not dirt 11:28 The twist inside the twist 12:08 Why you need a toothbrush now ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Toothpick grooves on the Krapina Neanderthal teeth, Croatia (about 130,000 years old) Weyrich et al.
