Orpington Bus Garage Open Day Celebrating 40 years Initially opened in September 1983 on the site of a farm, the six-bus operation has impressively grown over the last four decades. 1983 was an interesting time for transport in the UK. The country's bus system was on the cusp of fundamental change and, in many ways, the Metrobus story reflects that. In 1985, bus tendering in the capital became the norm and today's Orpington is home to around 150 buses and 22 Transport for London services, secured via a competitive bidding system that has, in various guises, remained in place since the mid-1980's. Although a red bus garage now, as this brochure details over the following pages, that was not always the case at Orpington.
