The US Air Force's E-4B Nightwatch – better known as the "Doomsday Plane" – seen on Runway 28 at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, this morning. Operating under callsign TALL68, the aircraft is in the UK as part of the support package for President Trump's visit to Ireland this weekend.
ABOUT THIS AIRCRAFT – 75-0125
The E-4B in this video is serial 75-0125, the most historic airframe in the fleet. It was the first aircraft built and delivered as a full E-4B, handed over in December 1979, while the three other E-4s (73-1676, 73-1677 and 74-0787) began life as E-4As and were upgraded later. Based on the Boeing 747-200B (MSN 20949, line number 257), it first flew on 29 April 1975 and was delivered to the USAF on 4 August 1975 before conversion. The E-4B is easily identified by the large streamlined radome on top of the fuselage behind the upper deck, which houses its satellite communications antenna.
ABOUT THE E-4B NIGHTWATCH
Just four E-4Bs exist, all flown by the 1st Airborne Command and Control Squadron, 595th Command and Control Group, from Offutt AFB, Nebraska. The aircraft is a National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC) – a flying command post for the President, Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs in the event of a national emergency or nuclear conflict. It is hardened against electromagnetic pulse, keeps analogue flight instruments for that reason, carries up to 112 crew and battle staff across three decks, and can stay airborne for days with air-to-air refuelling. An E-4B routinely deploys wherever the President travels overseas, which is why one is at Mildenhall this weekend. The fleet is due to be replaced by the E-4C Survivable Airborne Operations Center, based on 747-8 airframes.
Filmed at RAF Mildenhall, 12 September 2026.
