Ten minutes on the clock, an ambient drone underneath, and an alarm when the count reaches zero.
Ten minutes fits a writing sprint, one honest pass through your inbox, a run-through of a short talk, or the email you have been putting off.
The drone is a handful of held tones. It rises out of silence in the first few seconds and then stays where it is: no tune, no beat, only a slow and shallow swell. It is generated in a single pass for the full length of the video; it is not a loop. Wait until it has settled before you choose a volume; there is no separate test tone.
When one minute is left, the digits change from off-white to amber, so the end is visible with the sound turned down. At zero a chime of three rising notes rings and repeats twice, and the drone sinks away beneath it. By the final ring the drone is silent. Once the last note has died away, the video ends on a few quiet seconds with the clock still at zero.
On screen, the countdown sits across the centre in plain, even-width digits over a dark, slowly drifting field. Behind the numbers that field is dimmed further, so they read clearly at a glance. The background runs on its own fixed cycle of six minutes, so it comes round again once, six minutes in. It is rendered with code we wrote; none of it is stock footage.
The drone and the chime are synthesized in code. Nothing in the soundtrack is a recording.
A note on timing: the clock on screen is part of the video, so it only moves while the video is actually playing. A pause, a buffering stall or an ad break holds it where it is, and any playback speed other than normal makes the ten minutes shorter or longer. If the exact length matters, start it at normal speed and let it run.
Chapters give you shorter countdowns: jump in with five or two minutes remaining. Curious about the alarm before you commit? Open the last chapter, listen, then return to the start. The final-minute marker is where the digits go amber and the zero marker is where the alarm begins; the others only mark the time.
0:00 Full ten minutes
5:00 Five minutes remaining
8:00 Two minutes remaining
9:00 Final minute · amber digits
10:00 Zero · alarm
MERIDIAN is our series of countdown timers with an alarm at zero, and the 20-minute one sits in the same playlist. Which length would you use next? Tell us in the comments.
