In Loving Memory of Ray Caviano
A dear friend, a music visionary, and a cherished member of the Legends of Vinyl® family.
Some people leave their mark on the music industry. Others become part of its heartbeat. My dear friend Ray Caviano was one of those rare individuals whose passion, talent, and belief in music helped shape an era, and whose friendship made that history deeply personal to me.
It is difficult to find words that fully express the sadness of losing Ray. To so many around the world, he was a respected music executive, promoter, producer, and visionary. To me, he was also a dear friend and a valued member of the Board of Directors of the Legends of Vinyl® Music Hall of Fame. His presence brought experience, perspective, and a living connection to the culture we have dedicated ourselves to preserving.
Ray understood something essential about our world: a record’s journey depended on people. He listened to DJs, paid attention to dancers, and believed in the artists whose music deserved to be heard. He understood the excitement of discovering a song and watching it come alive on a dance floor. His work helped build the relationships that carried that excitement from one club to another, and eventually across the world.
From his influential work at T.K. Records to leading the disco division at Warner Bros. Records and founding RFC Records, the label bearing his initials, Ray helped bring dance music to a wider audience. His career joined musical instinct with the determination to give artists and their records a chance to flourish.
What stands out to me is the personal spirit behind those accomplishments. Ray belonged to an era when promotion meant a conversation, a telephone call, a visit to a DJ booth. It meant asking what was moving the crowd, and listening to the answer. He respected the DJ’s role and understood that the dance floor had something valuable to say.
As a pioneer DJ, I know how much those connections mattered. We were building a culture together, often without realizing how far it would reach. Ray was an essential part of that movement. His contributions live on in the records we treasure, the artists we celebrate, and the memories people still carry from those extraordinary nights.
Having him serve on the Legends of Vinyl® board was an honor. He understood why this history deserves recognition and why the people who created it must be remembered. His own life’s work was part of that history, and our organization will continue to honor his place within it.
Today, I mourn my friend with a heavy heart and deep gratitude. Gratitude for his friendship, for everything he contributed, and for the privilege of sharing a love of music that connected our lives.
On behalf of the Legends of Vinyl® Music Hall of Fame, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Ray’s family, loved ones, friends, and everyone grieving his loss.
Ray, you gave so much of yourself to the music and to the people behind it. We will remember you with love, respect, and appreciation. Whenever those records play and another generation discovers their magic, your legacy will continue.
Rest in peace, my dear friend. Your place in our history, and in our hearts, is forever.
