Cyprus’s Troodos Mountains offer a rugged, authentic alternative to coastal resorts, featuring historic stone villages, ancient monasteries, and high-altitude views.
Leaving the coastal chaos behind, the Kouris Dam acts as a proper boundary between the "postcard" Cyprus and the island’s authentic heart. In Laneia, a traditional artists' village, the rustic streets are lined with stone buildings dating back to 1903 and a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It’s a place that feels like a living museum, despite the bizarre inclusion of a gallery dedicated to Michael Owen. While the village is famous for its potent traditional wine, it’s the quiet, lived-in feel—complete with washing hanging over narrow alleys—that makes it worth the detour before heading higher into the peaks.
Further up, the atmosphere shifts from quaint to slightly haunting. Koilani sits in a sleepy silence, with many of its lower traditional houses abandoned following historic earthquake damage. It feels a world away from the bustling resorts, particularly when you’re navigating the crumbling foundations and empty streets. In Lofou, at 800m above sea level, the layout is a labyrinth designed to confuse; I found myself hitting five dead ends in ten minutes while trying to reach the central church. The village is beautifully preserved with its hillside Cypriot houses, but it’s a place where your sense of direction quickly goes on holiday.
The journey concludes in Omodos, which feels like the cultural main event compared to the more rustic outposts. The 4th-century Monastery of the Holy Cross is the big draw here, allegedly founded by St Helena and housing a piece of the blood-stained rope used to tie Jesus to the cross. While Omodos is busier and more geared towards tourists with its cafes and holiday rentals, the historic weight of the monastery and the surrounding valley views make it a necessary stop. If you’re tired of the sunbeds and want a change of scenery that feels like a different country, let me know in the comments if you’d take these mountain peaks over the beach.
