Today we’re listening to Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive,” one of the band’s most distinctive songs and a rock anthem built around the imagery of the American West. Released on Slippery When Wet in 1986, the song draws a parallel between the romanticized life of an Old West outlaw and the reality of a rock band constantly traveling from city to city. Instead of horses and frontier towns, the modern “cowboys” have tour buses, stages, guitars, and another crowd waiting every night. As two classical musicians, we were especially drawn to Richie Sambora’s unmistakable 12-string acoustic guitar introduction, the gradual expansion of the arrangement, Jon Bon Jovi’s storytelling delivery, the vocal harmonies, and the way the song grows from an intimate opening into a full rock anthem without losing its Western atmosphere.
