If we’re coming to Thailand for a better quality of life, we need to leave violence, intimidation, and unnecessary conflict behind. A new country deserves more than the same problems we say we wanted to escape.
In this video, I speak as a Black man who values the opportunity to live abroad, work hard, and enjoy a peaceful life. It frustrates me to see reckless behaviour overseas become another excuse for people to stereotype Black travellers and overlook those of us who are simply here to thrive and enjoy the country and what it has to offer.
I talk about the reported incident involving Chris Barnes in Pattaya. I’ve only heard one side of the story, so I’m not claiming to know everything that happened or inserting myself into the dispute. But whatever disagreements existed, I don’t believe they justify a physical attack, especially one of that violent and aggressive nature.
My position is that visitors who commit violent assaults should face accountability. Where the facts establish responsibility, I hope and support the Thai authorities DEPORTING and BANNING them from the Kingdom. Being a guest in another country comes with responsibilities.
I also discuss the behaviour I reject within parts of our own community: glorifying aggression, turning disagreements into confrontations, and treating disrespect, violence, and gangster behavior as something to be proud of. Those choices reinforce the stereotypes, even though they don’t represent Black people as a whole.
I’ve experienced Thailand as a place where I can enjoy peace and build a good life. I want other Black travellers to have that opportunity too—to explore, connect with people, build businesses, and contribute positively.
My message is simple: come here ready to respect the country, its people, and the other people sharing the space with you. If you’re planning to bring violence and intimidation with you, reconsider the trip.
How can we encourage more accountability and represent ourselves well abroad? Share your thoughts in the comments without threats, personal attacks, or speculation about people involved.
