In the middle of the twentieth century, a whole working waterfront in California sank by nearly nine meters — no earthquake, no storm. The cause was invisible and underground: oil being pumped out of the rock far below. So what actually fills the space the oil leaves behind? The answer isn't "nothing," and it isn't an empty cave waiting to collapse. It's stranger, slower, and it explains a dozen sinking cities around the world. This is the mechanism, step by step: oil isn't a lake in a cavern — it's trapped in the tiny pores of solid rock, under enormous pressure that helps hold the ground up. Pump it out, the pressure drops, the rock compacts, and the surface rides it down. We'll cover how saltwater refills the pores, how engineers stopped the sinking by pumping pressure back in (waterflooding), how the same process triggered earthquakes over a gas field in the Netherlands, and why the very same physics is sinking Mexico City and Jakarta today — this time by pumping out water, not oil. Because nothing under your feet is ever really still. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 The waterfront that sank on its own 00:41 The question: what fills the space? 01:09 What an oil reservoir really is 02:16 Pressure — the key to everything 02:50 Pump it out, and the rock compacts 03:51 Why the ground above sinks (subsidence) 04:32 What actually fills the space 05:13 The fix: putting the pressure back 06:06 The slow disaster you can't see 07:00 When it triggers earthquakes 08:34 The bigger picture: sinking cities 🔎 In this video: land subsidence, oil and gas reservoirs, reservoir compaction and pore pressure, waterflooding and repressurization, induced earthquakes (the Groningen gas field), groundwater over-extraction, and why cities like Mexico City and Jakarta are sinking — explained simply, with the mechanism front and center. 💬 Would you live in a city that's known to be sinking a few centimeters every year?
