Malta — Where History Lives | A Journey Through the Mediterranean

In May 2025, I travelled to Malta, arriving by ferry from the Italian island of Sicily. What I found was far more than a Mediterranean tourist destination. Behind its blue waters, golden limestone streets and ancient fortifications lies a history shaped by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, the Knights of St. John, the French and the British. In this film, I explore the streets of Malta and Valletta while reflecting on the island's history, architecture, language, culture and people. I talk about the lasting influence of the Arab period on the Maltese language and society, the extraordinary history of Valletta, Malta's place between Europe and North Africa, its modern economy, and even my encounters with Pakistani workers who have made Malta their home. More than anything, this is a journey through a place where history is not confined to museums.
